African Lion - The Legend of the Tsavo Man Eaters

African Lion

There has been much speculation about the man-eaters of Tsavo , with a good dose of sensationalism and dramatization of everything in the movie based on the story. " The Ghost and the Darkness " is an entertaining film , but certainly a spicy version above.
Translate " Tsavo " a " place of slaughter " that bears his name, if true. Among Lt. Col. John Patterson , who was building a railway bridge over the Tsavo River ( Kenya ) in 1898 , who hunted a wide variety of wildlife, and the two Tsavo lions that have killed and eaten more than 130 workers in India the name certainly fits the bill .

Over a period of nine months , Tsavo lions persecuted those who work in the construction of the bridge despite bomas ( fences constructed of thorny tree branches ) and the fires burn at night in an attempt to keep the wolves away from camp. The attacks took place mostly at night , when the lions get a tent and drag the unlucky victim and then go eat nearby.

Work stalled on the bridge when all workers have fled the fitness lion fear. Lt. Col. John Patterson , after many attempts , shot the first lion December 9, 1898 and 3 weeks later the second . Lions mane is 3m long from nose to tip of tail. After wolves have killed the crew returned to the bridge and completed the project.

Why do you get these man-eating lions ? Different theories abound, so let's take a look at some of them.

Theory 1: The lack of a mane of Tsavo Lions showed that there was something wrong with them : No, in fact, Kenya is known for its " no lions mane , which can be genetic . A theory of absence of these lions mane is incredible heat during the summer season . A thick mane in this heat could seriously hamper their hunting activity . the main reason lion has a mane is to protect the neck during the struggle for territory with another male lion installation .

Theory 2: Tsavo lions kill for fun : Not unlike the film in which dozens of people died in one scene, the lion will eat a victim and go. A wild animal first instinct is survival. Lions can kill enemies , like the hyena , or having fought against man resident, who can kill the existing cubs in the pride.

Theory 3: The food shortage has caused the lions to see humans as potential prey . During 1890 rinderpest ( disease ) killed millions of buffalo , zebras , gazelles and other wild animals in sub - Saharan Africa , so food was still limited and the workers provided an easy source of food.

Theory 4: An injury of any kind caused the lion to attack humans : possible . It is said that one of the lions had a broken molar and an abscess had developed below. This means that it was painful for the lion to eat the hard skin and meat of wild animals such as buffalo. The second assumption was hunting lion with the lion had the abscess.

Theory 5 : body unburied or shallow graves drawn to this area Lion : Possible . Railway dead may have been buried in a shallow grave , or not at all . This will attract the lions clean for an easy meal , and perhaps lead human beings alive. The slaves and ivory caravans en route to Zanzibar also frequently crossed the Tsavo River in this area, maybe pulling the bodies of their dead unburied .

Lion are opportunistic creatures , like most predators , and when a combination of factors come into play , the above scenario is easy to imagine. To date, where man and predators are living close call incidents lion man . In Tanzania, the majority of man-eating lions were healthy animals living in close proximity to humans and domestic animals such as goats and ducks are easy prey for the lion. Then add to the mix of a local farmer to keep their crops from animals prowl at night, while the lion is hunting , and incidents are unavoidable Lion installations .

The other theory is that human hunting may be a " learned behavior " and the problem will persist until you remove all pride . What is interesting is that the man-eaters never return to the same place two days in a row . Lions in Tanzania have come to break down the walls of mud huts or force their way through the roof to reach a victim, then drag away from the center of a lion.

In conclusion, I think it's safe to say that when humans and lions overlap in everyday life , are not bound by the installation lion incidents.
